Aortic Stent Grafting

Aortic Stent Grafting is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure used to treat selected aortic aneurysms and other conditions affecting the aorta. The procedure uses a specially designed stent graft to reinforce the weakened section of the aorta and redirect blood flow through the graft.

What Is Aortic Stent Grafting?

An aortic aneurysm occurs when a weakened area of the aortic wall becomes enlarged or bulges. If an aneurysm becomes sufficiently large or continues to grow, the risk of rupture can increase. Aortic stent grafting, also known as Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysms, places a fabric-covered metal stent inside the affected portion of the aorta.

The graft creates a new pathway for blood flow and helps prevent blood from entering the aneurysm sac, reducing pressure on the weakened arterial wall.

When Is Aortic Stent Grafting Recommended?

Aortic stent grafting may be considered for selected patients with:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
  • Thoracic aortic aneurysm
  • Certain aortic dissections
  • Aneurysms that are enlarging or have reached a size where repair is recommended

Not every patient is suitable for endovascular treatment. CT angiography and detailed assessment of the aneurysm's size, location and anatomy help determine whether a stent graft is appropriate.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

The procedure is generally performed under imaging guidance. A catheter is introduced through an artery in the groin and carefully guided to the affected section of the aorta. The compressed stent graft is then positioned and deployed across the aneurysm. Once expanded, it seals above and below the weakened area, allowing blood to flow through the graft.

Benefits and Follow-Up

Aortic stent grafting uses smaller access points than conventional open surgery and may offer a shorter recovery for appropriately selected patients. However, regular follow-up imaging is important after EVAR to monitor the graft and detect potential complications or changes in blood flow.

Expert Aortic Care

Dr. Avichala Taxak provides specialised evaluation and minimally invasive endovascular care for patients with aortic conditions. A detailed assessment helps determine whether aortic stent grafting or another treatment approach is suitable for each patient.

If you have been diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm, timely specialist evaluation can help you understand your treatment options and plan appropriate care.

Why Choose Expert Care?

Safe and effective aortic stent grafting requires accurate diagnosis, detailed imaging-based planning, and experienced endovascular technique. Modern stent-graft systems and advanced imaging can help specialists treat complex aortic disease with greater precision and lower procedural risk.

If you have been diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm or other aortic condition, consult an experienced vascular or endovascular specialist to determine whether aortic stent grafting is appropriate for you.

Every patient needs an individual assessment.

Aortic stent grafting may be appropriate for some patients, while another treatment may be better for others. A detailed evaluation helps determine the most suitable approach for your condition.
