Uterine Fibroid Embolization
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids. Also called Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), the procedure reduces blood flow to fibroids, helping them shrink and relieve symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure and frequent urination.
What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are common, non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. While many fibroids cause no symptoms, some can lead to heavy or prolonged periods, pelvic discomfort, abdominal pressure, urinary symptoms and other problems that can affect daily life.
What Is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?
During UFE, an interventional radiologist uses imaging guidance to insert a thin catheter into an artery, usually through a small access point in the groin or wrist. The catheter is carefully guided to the uterine arteries supplying the fibroids.
Tiny embolic particles are then delivered through the catheter to reduce blood flow to the fibroids. As their blood supply decreases, the fibroids gradually shrink, which can help improve fibroid-related symptoms.
Who May Benefit From UFE?
UFE may be considered for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids, particularly those experiencing:
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Abdominal discomfort or bloating
- Frequent or urgent urination
- Fibroid-related symptoms affecting quality of life
Ultrasound and, when appropriate, pelvic MRI can help determine the size, number and location of fibroids and assist with treatment planning.
Benefits of Uterine Fibroid Embolization
UFE does not require removal of the uterus and is performed through a small vascular access point rather than a large surgical incision. Compared with major surgery, it may involve less blood loss and a shorter recovery period for appropriately selected patients.
However, UFE is not suitable for everyone. Women who wish to become pregnant should discuss fertility considerations and alternative treatment options with their gynaecologist and interventional radiologist before choosing UFE.
Expert Fibroid Care
Dr. Avichala Taxak provides specialised evaluation and minimally invasive treatment for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids. A personalised assessment helps determine whether UFE or another treatment option is appropriate.
If fibroids are affecting your daily life, consult a specialist to understand your treatment options.
Why Choose Expert Care?
Safe and effective UFE requires accurate diagnosis, detailed imaging-based planning, and experienced interventional technique. Modern embolization methods can help specialists treat symptomatic fibroids with precision while preserving the uterus.
If you have symptomatic uterine fibroids, consult an experienced interventional radiologist and gynaecologist to determine whether UFE or another treatment is appropriate for you.
Every patient needs an individual assessment.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization may be appropriate for some patients, while another treatment may be better for others. A detailed evaluation helps determine the most suitable approach for your condition.
